Ebstar’s latest single arrives today, featuring longtime collaborator SkyDAWN. READY TO BE LOVED sits in hip hop, but carries the emotional density that defines the wider ESØTËRIC catalogue: production built around vulnerability, and vocals that earn the weight of the subject matter.
The pairing is not new. SkyDAWN appeared on the label’s second ever release, Life Is Beautiful (March 2022), and has returned to Ebstar’s catalogue across ECHOES OF LOVE I (2024) and Maknaebe (2024). What has changed across that arc is how plainly each artist is willing to write. READY TO BE LOVED is the first time either of them has put the cost of staying emotionally open at the centre of a record without the cushion of metaphor.
The production reflects that decision. Where Ebstar’s house and Amapiano work tends to lean on space and patient builds, the hip hop arrangement here is closer in. The drum programming sits forward in the mix. The bassline is clean, almost spare. The 808s carry weight without taking the room. SkyDAWN’s vocal sits a beat behind the kick, which is the production choice that gives the song its conversational quality. Listeners are not being performed at. They are being addressed.
Hip hop is not a category this label has stamped its name on. The catalogue has spent most of three years on house, Amapiano and the various genre adjacencies between them. READY TO BE LOVED uses the genre as a vehicle for plain speech rather than as an arrival point. The song has more in common with the introspective end of contemporary R&B and the conversational mode of recent Korean independent hip hop than it does with the chest forward swagger of mainstream rap.
The lyric is direct without being sentimental. It works at the gap between wanting connection and being willing to do what connection actually demands, which is to be seen and not to flinch. That gap is the song. The production resists asking the listener to feel anything in particular about it. Instead it leaves the door open and lets each listener decide what to do with that.
For two artists who have spent the better part of half a decade working through the same creative axis, this is the cleanest mutual statement they have made. Both have grown into a register where less is more, and the trust between them shows in the restraint.
READY TO BE LOVED (catalog TEO031) is available now on all major streaming platforms.
